Greater traffic congestions are expected due to renovation of the Golovec tunnel

LJUBLJANA, 12 June 2020 - Heavy traffic is returning to the old tracks relatively quickly after the end of the epidemic. Longer traffic jams are occurring especially in the morning and afternoon rush hours on the Ljubljana bypass and motorway entrances. This is expected to continue until the start of the school holidays, or until 24 June 2020, after which the traffic of daily commuters will decrease. There are more traffic jams than usual on the Ljubljana bypass and approach roads on Mondays and Fridays, and the situation is worse in the event of rainfall.

Due to the renovation of the Golovec tunnel on the eastern Ljubljana bypass, between 13 June and 16 August, traffic will run through one tunnel tube in both directions. At this time, there will be a ban on driving through the tunnel for trucks and buses, and all vehicles over 3.5 tons of maximum permissible weight (traffic will only be allowed for so-called "vignette vehicles").

During the works, traffic will run in both directions through one tunnel pipe, according to the 2 + 1 system. It is planned that two lanes from the direction of the southern bypass (Rudnik) towards the eastern bypass (Bizovik/Štajerska) will be open until 9 a.m., then two lanes from the direction of Štajerska towards the southern bypass/Dolenjska will be open until the evening, and only one lane in the opposite direction. During the road closure, traffic is expected to run for half an hour on only one lane in each travel direction.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, two lanes from the direction of the southern bypass (Rudnik) towards the eastern bypass (Bizovik/Štajerska), and one in the opposite direction is expected to be open by 9 a.m. on Monday.

Due to the completion of the road closure, the traffic this weekend through the tunnel from the direction of the southern bypass (Rudnik) towards the eastern bypass (Bizovik/Štajerska) will be regulated only on one lane, and in the opposite direction in two lanes. At the same time, from Friday, 12 June 2020 at 5 p.m. until Saturday, 13 June 2020 at 5 a.m., the slip road of the Malence junction from the direction of Dolenjska towards the Golovec tunnel/the eastern bypass will be closed.

During the refurbishment works at the Golovec tunnel, only vehicles up to 3.5 tons of maximum permissible weight (so-called “vignette vehicles”) will be allowed to pass through the tunnel, while heavier trucks and buses will have to use other parts of the ring road. The ban, with set signalling, will be valid from Friday, 12 June 2020 onwards. At the same time, the limitation of freight traffic at night on the northern bypass H3 will be suspended.

Longer congestions are expected from Monday, 15 June 2020 onwards, especially in the morning until approximately 9 a.m. from the direction of Štajerska/Bizovik towards the southern bypass (Rudnik) and Dolenjska motorway, where there will be one lane, and after the change of the road closure in the opposite direction. In the afternoon rush hour, from 3 p.m. onwards, we expect congestion and traffic jams from the direction of Štajerska/Bizovik towards the southern bypass (Rudnik) and the Dolenjska motorway. Although there will be two lanes in this direction in the afternoon, traffic in the afternoon rush hour in this direction is greatly increased.

Especially in the first days of the changed traffic arrangement through the Golovec tunnel, from Monday, 15 June 2020 onwards, very long traffic jams can be expected. In previous major motorway renovations, this often proved to be the case until users at least partially adapted and used other ring road routes or city roads. During rush hours, police officers will be more frequently in the wider area of the roadworks closures, especially in the initial period. In addition, the speed will also be slowed down with traffic control radar, thus increasing the safety of driving through the road closure. During rush hours, there will also be a towing service at the tunnel, which will intervene in the shortest possible time in the event of an emergency.

Motorway users can also contribute to greater safety and traffic flow during the road closures due to roadworks, by taking into account the traffic regulations and traffic signals, choosing the right lane before the road closure, and with tolerance in the event of a traffic jam. Too short of a safety distance, unnecessary overtaking, and changing lanes before and within a road closure, can quickly lead to an accident and consequently longer congestions.
