Special rules in winter on Slovenian roads

Sunday, November 15, 2009 11:06:06 AM

15 November is the date when special rules for traffic participants enter into force. The Road Traffic Safety Act defines winter conditions as follows:

It is considered that winter conditions are present on the road or its part outside of the mentioned period also when snow stays on the road surface or when the road surface is covered with snow, if it is frozen or covered with glaze ice.

In such cases vehicles must be fitted with winter equipment, which according to the Rules on devices and equipment of the vehicles on road (Articles 8 and 9) is:

For two-track motor vehicles up to maximum permissible weight of 3,500 kg, and trailer vehicles:
• winter tyres on all wheels or
• summer tyres and snow chains of adequate size for powered wheels or accessories equivalent to show chains as part of the vehicle equipment. Vehicles with four-wheel drive must have snow chains at least for the rear axle in case of full time drive, and at least for the axis switched full time in case of switch option.

Conditions requiring the use of snow chains are fulfilled when there is so much snow on the road surface that tyres do not have contact with the road surface (vehicle leaves snow trail).
