The Golovec tunnel will be closed for two months - renovation

Thursday, May 21, 2020 11:33:00 PM

On the eastern Ljubljana bypass, between the Malence junction and the Bizovik access point, the overtaking lane will be closed in both directions until 12 June 2020 inclusive due to preparatory work for the reconstruction of the Golovec tunnel. Traffic will run in the driving lane and the far right lane.

In the period from 12 June to 16 August 2020, refurbishment works are planned in the Golovec tunnel on the A1 motorway on the eastern Ljubljana bypass. As a result, one tunnel tube will be closed to traffic; two-way traffic for passenger cars and vehicles with a total weight not exceeding 3.5 t will be routed through the adjacent tunnel tube.

The western tunnel tube is expected to be completely closed from 12 June until 16 August and all traffic will be routed through the other tube. The reconstruction works will be carried out 24 hours a day and every day of the week; DARS will ensure the least possible disturbance to the traffic flow on the Ljubljana ring road through continuous adjustment of the work barrier.

Traffic for buses and vehicles with a total weight exceeding 3.5 t will be prohibited. Please observe the indicated restrictions when planning and carrying out extraordinary transport, as no changes to the described traffic regime will be possible

After being used for more than two decades, the Golovec tunnel, which was opened in 1999, is showing signs of damage that needs to be repaired. As this is one of the most congested tunnels, where both local and transit freight traffic increase annually, DARS has taken advantage of the reconstruction to upgrade the safety systems in the tunnel. In addition to increased safety and traffic flow capacity, the reconstruction will also result in lower tunnel maintenance costs in the future.

Based on the data of traffic counters from previous years, we have decided that reconstruction is to be carried out in the summer; the 2 + 1 barrier type will enable real-time adjustment to morning and afternoon peaks by changing lanes. This means that during the reconstruction work, traffic will run in two lanes in south-north direction and one lane in the opposite direction in the morning, and vice versa in the afternoon. During the closure of the western tunnel tube, traffic in the adjacent tube will only be allowed for vehicles up to 3.5 tons maximum authorized weight or so-called vignette vehicles.

After the completion of the reconstruction of the tunnel tube, works will be initiated (the replacement of lighting) in the adjacent Strmec arcade gallery; the works will be carried out at night and below traffic; therefore, they will not affect the traffic flow. The reconstruction of the eastern tunnel tube will commence next year during the summer months when traffic on the eastern Ljubljana bypass is lowest.

Flexible traffic direction according to the morning and afternoon rush hour

A special feature of the renovation is the possibility of quickly changing the direction of traffic through the barrier:

• two lanes in the western direction and one in the eastern direction,

•or vice versa.

This will daily adjust the flow of traffic through the tunnel according to the flow of traffic.
