Traffic forecast until beginning of July

Friday, June 23, 2017 12:20:00 AM

The limitation of cargo traffic and vehicles with maximum authorised total weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes in Slovenia will change on Saturday, 24 June. This means that from 24 June until 3 September, the limitation for these vehicles is: Sundays, public holidays, and non-working days from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Additional restrictions in high tourist season are on coastal roads where the limitation is: on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sundays, holidays, and other free days from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
We are approaching the end of June and thus the summer holidays in Slovenia. We can expect highly increased traffic on several sections on weekends, especially from Austria towards Croatia or towards the Slovenian and Croatian coast.

Next to Slovenian schoolchildren, some German states will also start their summer holidays this weekend.
Increased traffic is also expected at all main border crossings with Croatia at this time, mostly at the Gruškovje border crossing and at those in Istria.

Drivers can avoid traffic jams at the Gruškovje border crossing by planning and choosing an alternative route. Due to the closure of the Ptuj Bridge across the Drava River and to the border controls being tightened following European regulations, heavy congestion is expected on the A4 Drava Valley Motorway towards Croatia this year. We kindly ask users to observe the traffic signals and inquire about the state of the roads before starting their journey. Find more information here A4. Also consider tourist peak periods in the reverse direction of tourist destinations – from tourist destinations into city centres, where traffic is particularly increased on bypasses and crosses, i.e. central Slovenia or possibly before the Karavanke tunnel.

Envisaged works and blocks
Due to the project of HV electronic Toll Collection system implementation on the motorway network, several short-term full night-time road blocks are envisaged until the summer.

A1, Primorska motorway
Due to the renovation of the Ravbarkomanda Viaduct on the Primorska motorway, traffic on the Postojna – Unec section is on 2 narrowed lanes. The works are envisaged until late autumn.

H4, Vipava valley expressway
On the H4 Vipava valley expressway between Ajdovščina and Vogrsko there are extensive roadworks envisaged to be finished by the end of August. In the Vipava valley before the Selo junction in the direction of Razdrto, a half of the expressway is closed due to roadworks. There is two-lane traffic on the other half. At the Selo junction in the direction of Razdrto, exit and entrance roads are closed. In the direction towards Italy, the fast lane is closed between Ajdovščina and Selo.

Karavanke tunnel

There will be maintenance work in the Karavanke Tunnel on the following dates:

The tunnel will be fully closed between 8 P.M. and 5 A.M. from 27 to 28 June and from 28 to 29 June 2017.

Partially closed on:
- Monday, 26 June – between 10 p.m. and 12 p.m.;
- Tuesday, 27 June – between 12 a.m. and 8 p.m.;
- Wednesday, 28 June – between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m.;
- Thursday, 29 June – between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m.;
- Friday, 30 June – between 12 a.m. and 12 p.m.;
- Saturday, 1 July – between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m..

During the works, allowing for waiting periods before the tunnel, traffic will take approximately 30 minutes. Traffic is limited to a maximum width of 3.75 m.

Border crossings
Due to border controls being tightened, occasional longer queues are expected at the border crossings with Croatia. We recommend drivers first check the situation at the border crossings and use those with less traffic. You can see the map of all border crossings on the external Schengen border here.
