Traffic through the Karavanke Tunnel

Friday, January 29, 2016 6:55:00 PM

Drilling for the geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological studies required for the construction of the second tube of the Karavanke Tunnel is expected to begin on 1 February. 30-minute closures are scheduled three times daily in the direction of Austria (between 7:00 and 7:30, 15:00 and 15:30, and 23:00 and 23:30). Moreover, the tunnel will be completely closed for traffic (in both directions) for up to an hour every night (between 1:00 and 4:00).

The regime for transporting abnormal loads through the Karavanke Tunnel will change slightly from 1 February. Due to the construction work on the Austrian side, the last abnormal load movement of the evening towards Slovenia from Mondays to Fridays will be at 21:30 rather than 20:00 like before. This measure will be in effect until mid-summer. The other abnormal load movement times remain unchanged (at 1 in the morning towards Austria between Tuesdays and Saturdays and at 9:00 and 23:00 towards Slovenia between Mondays and Fridays, with an extra time slot on Mondays – midnight). During the time scheduled for abnormal load movements (if there are any), the tunnel is expected to be closed to other vehicles for 20 to 30 minutes.
