DARS will begin extensive roadworks in mid-November 2024 on the H4 expressway Razdrto-Vipava-Ajdovščina, which will include the placement of additional wind barriers, road resurfacing and reconstruction, additional pile walls and the relocation of the Rebernica viaduct supports to the base location. Works will be done in different phases until the end of 2026 and will include sections between Razdrto, Vipava, Ajdovščina and the Vipavski Križ cut-and-cover.
During this time, the expressway will have alternating traffic. Traffic in the direction of Razdrto will run on the expressway unhindered on both traffic lanes. Passenger cars and local goods traffic in the direction of Vipava will be diverted to the parallel Razdrto-Vipava regional road. The transit goods traffic will be directed to the Fernetiči border crossing.
H4, EXPRESSWAY NANOS-VRTOJBA
The section of the Vipava expressway between the Nanos interchange and the Vipava junction, through Rebrnice, is one of the most dangerous sections for traffic management due to the extremely unfavourable weather conditions, which include strong winds (the bora wind) requiring traffic restrictions for certain vehicle types.
This section is also difficult due to its road gradient (at 6%), it has no emergency lanes, and it is close to Goli vrh, which is the highest motorway point in Slovenia and is linked to snow conditions and poor visibility.
In addition, goods traffic has also increased substantially.
During this time, the expressway will have alternating traffic. Traffic in the direction of Razdrto will run on the expressway unhindered on both traffic lanes. Passenger cars and local goods traffic in the direction of Vipava will be diverted to the parallel Razdrto-Vipava regional road. The transit goods traffic will be directed to the Fernetiči border crossing.
The new traffic arrangement has been adopted with the participation of DARS and the local communities based on the initiative provided by the Municipality of Vipava and the Municipality of Ajdovščina, supported by the Municipality of Postojna.
The Police and emergency services were also of the opinion that two-way traffic on one-half of the expressway through Rebrnice would make interventions and rescue operations difficult in emergency situations. The expressway from Nova Gorica runs along the Nanos slope and rises upwards, which only adds to the risk. Such a temporary traffic arrangement is an exception due to the construction works and is not planned to be used during other reconstruction works.

The majority of the 16km long section of the expressway between Razdrto and Vipava was constructed and opened in 2009, i.e. the 10km section along the Nanos slope. The remaining part opened between 2000 and 2003. The expressway between Vipava and Vipavski Križ (or Selo) was built in 1999. The sections under reconstruction had not been reconstructed since they were built.
