Slovenske Konjice–Dramlje A1 Reconstruction

Slovenske Konjice–Dramlje A1 Reconstruction

Reconstruction work on the Dramlje–Slovenske Konjice section has entered a more intensive phase.

The traffic arrangements will be adjusted according to the expected traffic volumes. Congestion is expected!

To keep traffic flowing safely and smoothly, we urge drivers to:

  • Follow the traffic signs at all times.
  • Keep a safe distance.
  • Ensure correct positioning when approaching a road narrowing.
  • Avoid sudden lane changes.
  • Driving incorrectly in front of closures increases the risk of accidents and further slows down the flow of traffic.

SLOVENSKE KONJICE–DRAMLJE

The A1 motorway section from Slovenske Konjice to Dramlje is a moderately busy part of the motorway network, but it is a key transport link due to increasing goods traffic and daily commuting.

The main closure will take place in the summer months when the daily commuter load is a little lighter. Nevertheless, traffic congestion will be an issue at peak times. Goods vehicles without a local destination are already banned from local and state roads in the area.

The average annual daily traffic (AADT) on the Slovenske Konjice–Dramlje motorway section in 2023 was 40,640 vehicles per day, of which 6,255 were goods vehicles, taking into account both directions of travel.

Work is currently being carried out on the right edge of the carriageway towards Ljubljana, with only the emergency lane between the Slovenske Konjice junction and the Golo Rebro tunnel closed.

More extensive construction works are expected to start at the end of March 2025, when the overtaking lane on the carriageway towards Ljubljana will be closed. This closure will be in place until the start of the summer holidays at the end of June 2025. The works will be carried out on the central reservation.

SCOPE OF WORK

The reconstruction of the Slovenske Konjice–Dramlje motorway section will include:

  • Reconstruction of 13 km of motorway carriageways towards Ljubljana and Maribor.
  • Upgrading the drainage and inner lining of the Pletovarje and Golo Rebro tunnels.
  • Installation of forced ventilation in all tunnel tubes.
  • Providing escape routes through existing tunnel cross passages.
  • Replacement of low-voltage equipment and the surveillance control system.
  • Rehabilitation of viaducts and bridges, including Škedenj I, Škedenj II and Grapa.
  • Installation of new noise barriers in exposed locations.

To ensure the best possible traffic flow, a 1+1+1 system will be in place, which means:

  • During the morning rush hour, two lanes will be open towards Ljubljana and one towards Maribor.
  • In the afternoon rush hour, traffic will be regulated in the opposite direction – two lanes towards Maribor and one towards Ljubljana. When two lanes are open from Celje towards Maribor, it is necessary to change to the right driving lane at the beginning of the closure at Dramlje in order to exit at Slovenske Konjice.

  • During weekdays, the adjusted traffic arrangement will apply from the early morning hours, while at weekends, the traffic arrangements will be adjusted according to the expected traffic volumes.
  • The most complex construction works, which will have the greatest impact on traffic, involve the rehabilitation of tunnels and viaducts and will start at the end of June 2025.
  • During this period, traffic between Slovenske Konjice and Dramlje will be two-way for approximately 90 days on one half of the motorway, one lane in each direction. The entry to the motorway to Ljubljana at the Slovenske Konjice junction will be closed during this time.

In 2026, the carriageway towards Maribor will be closed during the summer months and traffic will be diverted to the other half of the motorway, where it will run two-way, one lane in each direction. In the meantime, traffic will be organised into 4 narrowed lanes, 2 in each direction of travel.

Before the start of the extraordinary transport, it is mandatory to check the transportability of this part of the transport route and, due to the necessary measures on traffic signalling and equipment, to announce, agree and coordinate in advance with the head of the ACB Slovenske Konjice (DARS), during working hours until 2:30 p.m.
